From
Booklist:
The
Hernandez brothers recently published the last issue of their alternative
comics groundbreaker, LOVE & ROCKETS. This book collects Jaime's last
stories from the magazine, which wrap up a saga begun in 1981. Heroine
Maggie has been languishing at her aunt Vicki's women wrestlers' camp in
rural Texas, far from the series' original locus in the L.A. barrio. |
|
|
|
Jaime
brings back other cast members, ranging from Maggie's sister Esther to
billionaire's wife Penny Century, and he even makes a fantastic nod to
the series' early science fiction slant. Of course, at the very end, Maggie
is reunited with soul mate Hopey. The need to tie up loose ends brings
a bit of welcome structure to a series that has been meandering, albeit
pleasantly, in recent issues, and as ever, all events are rendered in Jaime's
handsome, Archie-goes-boho style. Obviously, this conclusion isn't the
advisable point for libraries to start buying the series. Those who have
been along on the ride, though, won't want to miss it.

An
era in alternative comics ended this year when the Hernandez brothers published
the last issue of LOVE AND ROCKETS. CHESTER SQUARE collected the last of
Jaime's "Hoppers 13" stories from the magazine, and this volume, LUBA CONQUERS
THE WORLD, rounds up the last of Gilbert's stories of the rural Latin American
village of Palomar. A cataclysmic event brings many of the continuing characters
back home; complementarily, a pivotal village figure departs. |
|
|
|
Yet
life goes on much as it always has. In the Palomar saga, Gilbert brought
magical realism to comics and, with it, a complexity that shattered the
limitations of the medium. Over the course of the series, his illustrative
style grew more expressive and assured, and he developed a masterful ability
to juggle a huge cast, many plot lines, and various timelines, too--in
all, a wealth of material that may hopelessly confuse those trying to come
on board at this point. Those who have faithfully followed the series will
cherish this final journey to Palomar and hope that Gilbert will someday
return to it.
