ADASTRA IN AFRICA
is a major, previously unpublished graphic story by Barry Windsor-Smith,
the renowned comics storyteller. It features Adastra, the most popular
member of the YOUNG GODS serial from BWS' ground-breaking STORYTELLER series. |
|
|
|
Created by Windsor-Smith
as the third and final installment of the acclaimed LIFEDEATH issues of
Marvel Comics' THE UNCANNY X-MEN, the poignant tale resided in BWS' files
for over a decade after editors at Marvel declined to publish the story,
which was not written and drawn under their supervision. BWS felt this
work was too good to let languish, so he reconfigured it as an episode
from the earlier life of Princess Adastra, who was exiled to earth by her
mother, Queen Organa of Orgasma.
This volume is augmented
by an amusing, irreverent interview with the irrepressible Lady Adastra,
now back in New York after some time abroad, and features never-before-seen
outtakes from the story.
The publisher, Fantagraphics

story of an outsider attempting to use her powers to help a defiantly proud
people regain their vitality features some of the most beautifaul and graceful
drawings of Windsor-Smith's career. The story is augmented by a fresh,
amusing interview with Her Royal Highness, Princess Adastra, as well as
background material about this beloved character. Not to be missed, and

Barry Windsor-Smith
has been a pop culture icon since his fantastic and meticulous drawings
brought Conan the Barbarian to life in the pages of Marvel Comics beginning
in 1970. Over a thirty year period since, he has continued to forge new
channels of personal expression in the storytelling arts. |
|
|
|
With this first
volume of BWS: OPUS, the acclaimed artist and writer of romantic, witty
and heroic fantasies pulls hard on the rudder of Reality to turn back against
the course of Time. But this is no "time-travel" caper, it is the real
thing. Barry Windsor-Smith has a past; a history to tell of Extraordinary
Experiences that are no less exciting or bizarre than any of his literary
or painterly creations.
The true story of BWS, as
a lone soul caught up in the transcendent phenomena of Cosmic Experience
begins here, in his autobiography called OPUS. |

"Frank
will take you to another world, rearrange your consciousness, and reprogram
the inside of your head. It's cheaper than virtual reality, less risky
than recreational pharmaceuticals, and more fun than falling asleep."
--Neil
Gaiman
|
Like the best
dreams, Jim Woodring's stories defy explanation. Frank, a vaguely bearlike
creature with Mickey Mouse gloves, lives in a beautifully drawn, disturbingly
strange world. Frank's wordless adventures may seem simple on first reading,
but they will stick in your mind for a long time. The comic-book format
presents us with a series of images that we are encouraged to string together
into a narrative. Still, Woodring's work resists a simple interpretation.
The comparison with dreams is impossible to resist, and Woodring has created
something to rival the work of the most famous surrealist painters and
writers. Like Dali, he creates a universe with a bizarre logic of its own,
a dream world of extraordinary depth. Utterly odd, yet strangely familiar,
Frank is one of the most memorable comic books ever created. |

"[Woodring]
is an original surrealist. Rich and universal, his work is unequalled by
anything in comics since George Herriman's Krazy Kat."
- World Art
The cartoonist Jim Woodring
- creator of the bestselling surrealist comic adventures of the anthropomorph
Frank - and legendary jazz guitarist/Nonesuch recording artist Bill Frisell
have collaborated to create this unique multimedia storybook for the ages.
Reminiscent of a Little Golden
Book, this full-color, hardcover storybook spotlights the playful eponymous
pachyderm-like creature who wants nothing to do but play with his colorful
bouncing ball. Unfortunately, there are menacing forces conspiring against
him! With one full-color painting per page, and no words, Woodring has
crafted a masterfully compelling yet simple narrative of innocence and
fear that will inspire multiple re-readings by children and adults for
years to come.
The accompanying CD will
come packaged inside the book in a custom pocket. Frisell's ambient and
ethereal jazz soundtrack creates a remarkable aural tension that perfectly
complements Woodring's eye-poppingly vibrant and colorful landscapes. The
result is a wonderful gift item for fans of quality children's literature,
fine art and comic books, not to mention the many music lovers whom will
invariably make this a highly sought-after Frisell collectible.
